A World full of Aspect Ratio

What is aspect ratio you ask? It’s the ratio between your TV, laptop, tablet, or your phone display’s width and height. Aspect ratio is easily identified by maximum resolution of a display, if you reduce a 1080p display’s resolution 1920/1080, you get 16/9 or the aspect ratio 16:9.

So, what’s this about world full of aspect ratio? While 16:9 has dominated the display market for the past decade or so, it was never quite alone. 16:10 never quite went away, mobile market has seen both 15:9(Nokia Lumia) and 3:2(iPhone), and PC gaming is seeing a huge demand for 21:9 display in recent days. While having different aspect ratios is great for filling every niche in market, it makes it difficult to compare display sizes. A 27” 16:9 display is actually bigger than a 29” 21:9 display, a 5.7” LG V20 with a 16:9 display is bigger than a 5.7” LG G6, which has an 18:9(2:1) display or even a 5.8” Galaxy S8. And it’s not just total area, different aspect ratio also means different device width on a phone, or a different device height for a pc display.

Galaxy S8 has the same display width as a regular 5.2” display phone. A 29” 21:9 display has the same display height as a regular 23” display.

These properties actually make these great choices if they fit your need. As a matter of fact, I am writing this on a 21:9 29” display, it’s amazing for gaming. And the reduced width makes Galaxy S8 much easier to hold than its diagonal size would make you think. But the point of me writing this is that people should know what they are getting, and if you’re reading this I assume you’re the type who likes to know what you are getting.

There is a formula for that, it’s not that hard really, some basic trigonometry can get you here. All I did was make it into an easily pluggable format. You’ll remember I said that the resolution will give you the ratio, which in trig is Tangent value, so adding the diagonal to the mix we can figure out the display’s height and width. And the area is just multiplication, which looks like this,


Of course for our purpose we need separate equation for height and width. So,

Surface Dimension I Want

Update: I shoud have done this when Surface Pro 3 was released. I am so glad people at Microsoft saw this issue the same way I did. No, I don’t think they saw this blog post and re-though Surface’s diemensions. But I am glad anyway, because the point is to get 3:2 aspect ratio on hybrid devices.

I did some research on what I want for a Tablet’s dimensions.

Best aspect ratio in my opinion is 3:2
3:2 or 1.5 is the average of 4:3(1.333) and 16:9(1.667)
A happy middle ground of portrait and landscape.
Proposal: 1920:1280

Surface’s Dimensions:
Height: 1080/208=5.1923″
Width: 1920/208=9.2308″
Diagonal: Sqrt(5.1923^2+9.2308^2)=10.59092290265584 -> Verified
Screen area: 5.1923″ *9.2308″ =47.9291 inch2

Laundry List for Windows

Microsoft has been enjoying an almost monopoly in enterprise and consumer computing for almost as long as personal computers has existed. But as Android and iOS gains popularity, Microsoft needed to take necessary measurements.

The Metro Modern design language is in my opinion Microsoft’s doorway to dominating next generation of computing. But as it stands, compared to the desktop environment, it is still woefully lacking. This post is intended to be a “laundry list” of tweaks I believe Microsoft needs to do on Windows for a improved user experience.

Windows Desktop

Add podcast support into Windows Media Player. OR Update Zune.

Desktop can get Metro Interface elements like this.


Internet Explorer zoom settings should be independent of the Metro IE.

Desktop apps should be able to integrate with charms bar too. Do more than just screenshot share.

The Case for Windows 8 on Desktop

Since its launch on October 26, 2012 Windows 8 has been taking taking some criticism from from pretty much all direction for its inclusion of the tablet centric interface, formerly known as “Metro”, into its full fledged version. Unfortunately it’s a completely new take on a consumer OS interface and the confusion was not unforeseen. Heavy users are dissing it for not being integral to their workflow, no-savvy users are mostly uncomfortable with the change. People are seemingly preferring Windows 7 over 8 for the more known/familiar interface paradigm.

Surface RT vs. New iPad: A Comparison

And so it has finally surfaced(pun intended), and the tech world is going into their analysis mode to determine which is better and why and which deserves our hard earned penny. So I am going to jump onto the bandwagon and offer my 2 cents. Rather than simply posting a chart and compare few bullet points, I am going to talk about what’s behind those bullet points. Bullet points are easier to look at, but there are always more to those points that everyone should take into consideration before taking out the wallet. What does higher/lower resolution means? What are the benefits of having a keyboard? What about the apps? How does having a USB port benefit me? Let’s take a look.

First thing first and let’s get this over with, that is resolution. I must say I am kind of disappointed about the resolution on RT. The resolution of 1366*768 is kind of disappointing to have, it should have been 1080p, not less but not more either. But I shall thoroughly disagree with iPad fans here and say more resolution is not necessarily better. Yes higher resolution and in turn higher pixel density is great to look at, but it does inarguably come with a few caveats, weight(if not battery life), heat, performance. iPad 3 despite having a stronger SoC inside compared to iPad 2, had visibly worse gaming graphics as this article finds.

Choice Is Good, RIGHT? (Part 1)

PC users always boast one thing(amongst others) over Mac, “we have choices”. PCs come in different brands, shapes, monitors, configurations, case sizes, OS versions, with crap-ware or signature and so on. A moderately savvy user will be able to get exactly what he/she wants in the PC. Now I believe this is what drive down price and computers are now everywhere. Bill Gates’ renowned dream of putting a PC in every home has surpassed even the dream, now every home has multiple computers, one for every person!

Now the situation arises right here. 10 years ago PC was common, affordable and not DOS like scary any more. People are buying them and using for variety of tasks. But now that instead of one computer per household it has become three computer (I am just putting up a number) per household, the  main demographic of computer user has changed. It may sound a bit snobbish and it likely is, instead of technologically aware/trained people using computer, now every tom, dick and harry uses it. Don’t get me wrong, I am not against it nor do I mind, but I am talking about the effect of this phenomenon.
